My sister a Jenn Air CVE1400 range that has a problem with one of the burners. It only has one setting: High! The knob is not free-spinning, it works ok & shuts off the burner just fine, but has no heating adjustments.

That was indeed the problem. I picked up 2 switches via the net for $63. That was the cost of just one switch at Maytag!
