I am looking for a (HSI) glow igniter for a tappan-Vista gas oven. There r not any numbers on the old igniter. i could only make out a few numbers from the oven model # DPMBWAN, and these from SN 21977, I do know it is a 1984 model.

I located an igniter at AppliancePartsPros.com that says it fits many different brands including Tappan and looks identical to mine for $45.

r most of these igniters universal?
how can i be sure i am getting the correct part?

Thanks for any help!

Hello Nolan. Welcome to the Gas Appliances topic.

All your questions can be answered and you can obtain the correct part at almost any local appliance parts store in your area. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Also bring the existing igniter. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.

Igniter's "R" not all universal. Each type has it's own resistance value to allow the gas control valve to operate properly. Best bet, in my opinion, is to buy the igniter locally instead of on line. Also be aware that the part is an electrical part. Which makes it non returnable nor refundable if purchased on line, etc. Read the "Fine" print.

Additional Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers on line web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes, solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, schematics, repair and or owners manuals which may be available on line.

Cautionary Reminder Note:
Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first.
