OK,so I want to restain my 48" solid oak non claw foot pedestal table with 12" leaf. It now has a honey oak type finish and I want to stain it with medium cherry finish to match new cabinets. I know the table was finished with tung oil as my husband and I finished it originally. My question/questions are
1. How do I procede?
a. I know I need to take it apart
b. Do I clean with mineral spirits or what?
c. How do I strip the previous stain or do I sand or do I
stain over?
d. I have a couple of dark rings that I think I can use
oxalic acid to lighten, is that correct?
e. This is a kitchen table, used for many things
(eating,grandchildren painting, coloring etc), what
is the best finish for this? I would really like one
that is more foolproof than poly, sand, poly, sand
as that has never been my forte.
Thanks in advance for all the assistance. We are near the end of our remodel and due to my husband's job being eliminated b/c of economy, I am trying to do as much of this myself as possible. I have refinished furniture in the past. Brands of good products to use would be appreciated.:D
