I'm trying to create a old painted finish look on a piece of furniture. I want it to look like layers of paint that have been put on over the years. Is there a process or medium that will give me that look without having to put on multiple layers of paint. Is there something out there that I could brush on that would give me that rough textured look ?....thanks for your help, Jim

Depending on your skills and use of various tools, you can mix some joint compound with some latex primer and brush or trowl on a thick coat. While it is wet, you can experiment with different mottled effects to get what you want. Then perhaps paint, and apply a glaze to suit. Maybe a crackle finish?

Glad it worked out, you never know when you're going to "invent" something.
