the dryer will not auto shut off when using the auto sensing setting. It will shut off using the time dried. I replaced the timer but it still has the problem. The dryer will keep running for hours.

make sure the moisture strips are not shorted together

In fifteen years of being an appliance repairman I have never seen the sensor cause this problem but it could. GE dryers have two heating elements if one is bad the timer will not turn on automatic cycle but you will still feel heat in the tub. So replace the heating element and your problem will be fixed.
