I have +15-year old hard-wired smoke alarm. In the past week the high-pitched noise is getting louder and it's giving me a headache. Is there something wrong with it? I took it off the wall to see if I could disconnect it and not sure how to do it. The alarm is in between the bedrooms. If can disconnect it, I would replace it with a battery operated alarm.

should be able to just unplug wire harness, worse case senario just cut-off wires and put wire nuts at end of it

At 15 this smoke alarm is about 5 years past replacement age.

Go to your favorite hardware store and get another AC with DC backup smoke alarm and replace it.

Don't leave yourself unprotected. Fire fighters hate investigating fires and finding the smoke alarms disconnected with the batteries pulled.
