Hi all,

I am building a bar in my basement and instead of a brass foot rail/rest, I built a step out of framing lumber and covered it with 3/4 inch OSB. I want to cover it with porcelain tile. My thinset directions says do not apply over OSB. It's solid and should stay dry. Can I use premixed wall mastic to lay the tile on the step?

Thanks,

You need to cover the OSB with a cement backerboard, and I would not use mastic. Use a powdered thinset.

Either use cement board or an isolation membrane over the osb. You cannot set tile directly to osb, it is far to unstable. Don't use mastic (anything premixed in a bucket) on floors no matter what the instructions say. You can do a search for the mastic nightmares if you like. Use a modified thinset on cement board for floors. See manufacturers instructions for thinset type if you decide to use an isolation membrane.
