I used a additional layer of plywood and then hardi-backer on my bathroom subfloor to prepare for tile. I used 2.5 sheets.
I have to tile the small closet in the corner which is about 2' x 2'- Can I use a few of the leftover scraps of backboard and piece it together with the mortar? I'd hate to go out and buy another full piece and cut it when I have enough leftover. it's just that I will have more joints, but like I said- it is the closet

I wouldn't use pieces smaller than 12" square. Larger, of course is better, but in a closet that small, no traffic, you should be ok.

I second chandler, but you might have a height issue without using it. No need to buy another sheet. Use what you got, tape the seams.
