I have stripped the wallpaper as best I can. The outer layer pulled off without using a stripper. Then I used water/fabric softener stripper to get off all of the under layer of paper and almost all of the glue. I wash and wash the wall to remove the glue using fabric softener/water. Each time I check I still get some slimey glue residue. Can I cover this with a primer or do I have to keep scrubbing?:madhell:

While it's best to remove all the adhesive, you can apply a coat of zinnser's gardz over the adhesive to seal it. After the primer is dry and sanded, it should be ready for paint.

I would recommend getting all the wallpaper paste off, leaving paste under size or primers, can create a mildew nightmare. After removing the wallpaper, get a garden sprayer, fill it with hot water and whatever else you want, softener or remover, (naturally having covered the floor) and spray on your mix. Use steel wool or a scotch pad and remove the rest of the paste, it isn't that hard. You'll know it's off when you can run your moist fingers over the surface and they won't be sticky. Most people in the "wallpaper removal business," don't give the water enough time to work. The garden sprayer keeps things neat, puts on plenty of liquid, and makes the process easy. Next time you strip, put drop cloths around the room, open newspapers and lap them on top of the drops, spray on the water until the surface is visibly moist, and scrape the paper onto the newspaper, roll it up and put it in a big trash bag, and you're off...
