I have a 35-year old Sears Coldspot upright freezer that has never needed repairs (other than condenser cleaning) and has worked perfectly all these years even having been moved 8 times, including back and forth overseas. Lately it seems to run constantly, even though I've raised the internal temperature to around 5 degrees F from its former -2F.

I realize I should be happy it lasted this long and just get a new one. I just wonder how much in a hurry I should be. Is it dangerous for the motor to run continuously? In other words, could it overheat and start a fire?

Perhaps the thermostat is stuck or quit working or the freon (or whatever) refrigerant is ineffective or leaking, but nothing smells different. Also, the door seals are still very tight and cool air does not appear to be leaking out. I'm a little afraid to turn the thermostat too much warmer in order to see if it cuts off, in case it doesn't want to come back on and I have to rush to get a new freezer.

Any advice? Should I hurry to get a new freezer?

Have you tried to defrost this thing? You might try that. Coils clean?

If the stat was stuck and there were no other issues, the temp would keep dropping colder than what it is.

Fire? Not sure what kind of protection that old compressor has. Does it feel like you could fry and egg on it?, or not?

When I was a kid, a half-century ago, an all-metal oscillating fan in my bedroom burst into flames.
