Hello all
We have just moved into a rented appartment. It is only a 5 years old, and it is super-energy efficient - it is incredibly well sealed, and very warm inside so it never needs heating.
The problem is that I think because of this, air doesn't circulate so well. The apparment is small, one bedroom, with an open plan kitchen/living room.
The problem is that there is such a stale smell all the time in the appartment! We have no idea why. There are no carpets, no curtains, no nasty floors (just a nice, clean parquet). We have moved all the furniture around, nothing behind it, we've cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. We leave the (huge) windows open virtually all day, and overnight in the living room.
Still, the minute we close the windows and leave the place and return a few hours later - the smells are back, as if the house was never aired!
The smell is kind of like old cooking - and judgind from the frying stains left by the previous tenant I'd say they did *a lot* of wok and deep frying! Could these smells still be lingering? How can it be possible?
I always keep the window and ventilator on whilst cooking, but returning to the old stale smell after work is driving me crazy! It's there no matter what we do!
Does anyone have any ideas what on earth is going on?
Thanks everyone.

Most homes require 60-80 CFM of fresh air during occupied times. Sounds like this home does not have this. Get a restoration company to ozone the home one day. Warning You can not be in the home or pets, plants when this is being done.

if its a rental ask the landlord..if the apartment was sealed and painted prior to movein...ozone will help...but can be costly...let the landlord make the call..what type of heating does exist?

If it has a range, have you pulled it out to see what is behind it. Some of that frying oil may still be back there.
