I am redoing a bathroom floor. The tile that was installed originally has had several recurring issues including the grout cracking and coming out. I have decided to eliminate the recurring headache and install some high quality vinyl.

I have removed the old tile and as much thin set as I possibly can. I am now staring at a layer of hardy board. I would like to use Luan as the vinyl underlayment but I believe I need to float the hardy board layer with a leveling compound to ensure I am starting with a smooth level surface for the vinyl.

Questions: Can I install the vinyl directly on top the leveling compound (Once set of course) or does it make sense to install the Luan on top of the leveling compound (Once set of course) and install the vinyl on the Luan? How would one best attach the Luan to the leveling compound?

Many thanks!
