We just purchased a new home and several walls are covered in painted brick..it looks like cinderblock to me! I would like to cover the brick with some sort of textured material and then paint it so it has that "Tuscan" look. Any suggestions?

Are the walls brick or covered with thin brick like Z-Brick or fake brick panelling?

If it's either of the last two you might be better off removing it.

As for covering it: almost anything you use will still leave the mortar joints showing unless you fill them first.

It makes a difference if it has been painted or not. So is it cinderblock painted to look like brick or is the pattern done in plaster or stucco and embossed to look like brick?
A picture sure would help.

I'm trying to understand the block wall. Do you have a block house with no framing on the interior side of the exterior walls?

Sorry I still havent been ableto post a picture I know it would answer a lot of questions. I think what I need to do is cover the brick with some some of stucco..so that it would have some texture and then I could paint. Can I still hang pictures etc if I did that? Any ips to using stucco or anything else you would recommend?

If this has been painted you should use a bonding agent and even then the bond is only as good as the paint to which you are bonding. A more complicated way is to attach metal lath before you stucco.

You can use anchors to hang pictures.

You might find a suitable color for the stucco finish and not have to paint.
