Hello, I just joined this site, and am glad to have stumbled upon it. I'm in the process of completely re-doing my bathroom, and am currently working on finishing the walls...
I've used the Durock Aqua Tough BackerBoard around the tub, and cement board on the floor. I've been getting conflicting advice from all over telling me what I should be doing for the tub surround though in terms of finishing it before tiling. I've purchased the tiles already (12"x12" ceramic tiles), and am wondering if anyone here can provide me with some insight as to what I should be doing with the joints of the backerboard. I was told by a several people that I should be using drywall mud and drywall tape on all the joints and then just use thinset to put the tiles on, but I don't see why I would use drywall compound and drywall tape when I used thinset and fibre mesh tape on the floor... I have already put on the drywall compound and drywall tape, but as I'm sure you're all aware, that can easily be undone... So what should I be using?
I really need to finish this bathroom, as we have been living with only a half bath for the past 2 months and my wife is none to happy about it!

Follow the manufacturers instructions. See this link.

In you case, use modified thinset and alkalai resistant mesh tape on the joints.:)
Never use drywall compound in tub surrounds.
