In the market for new appliances. Not sure what type of electric oven/range to get. I heard the ceramic top ranges get dirty very easily and are hard to clean, scratch easily, etc. I was also thinking about electrolux, but that may be too expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We recently replace both our countertop stove and built-in oven. Did the reading for the glasstop units, and chose to go with coil elements instead. I know going with coil has done absolutely nothing for my resale value (everyone "wants" glasstop"), but from what Ive read theyre just a real pain. Sugars are the real enemy of them, can permanently etch into the glass if you dont clean up correctly. Cant drop things, use the wrong type of cookware, clean with the wrong chems etc.

There's some amazing new stuff out, inductive, but you need special cookware (and its glasstop too, although Im not sure of the same sugar/etc restrictions...). Pricey, but pretty wild, you can put your hand right on it and its not hot, then put a pan on it and it nearly instantly boils.

I think our back coil unit with matching black coverplates looks just fine. :)

I was tempted by one glasstop unit though.. real highend model that was drastically reduced in price.. a previous purchaser bought and returned it, then the store noticed some of the numbers/decals for one control were "gone" (apparently the first owner cleaned it with the wrong chem, then returned it). Since it was about 70% off, I went thru the process of getting a quote from the manuf on a replacement top (if i wanted to get those numbers back in a proper way). The price of the top (no elements, just the glass) was more than the price of the unit itself ($1200). lol Imagine dropping a jar of spice on it, cracking it and finding that one out !

As for brands of appliances.. Im still sold on the Whirlpool stuff sourced as Kenmore brands (Sears). Just make sure you look up the kenmore code for it though, cause they badge a real wide range (from questionable to great) of units as "Kenmore". The salesperson has access to the list of which units are actually made by which company (or there are lists on the net too..)

Happy shopping..
