Hi I have a fax line that the phone company has already come out and hooked up at the outside phone box. I would like to have the phone jack in my office wired to accept this fax line but not sure how to do it. I have a T568A phone port with 8 wires, its an on Q system.the phone company has used the orange/white wires for my fax line at the outside box. What do i need to do at the main control panel or at the jack in my office to utilize atwo port splitter for phone and fax.

You're adding a 2nd line to the office for the fax, where there is already a phone line, correct?

The easiest way to do this is to replace the existing single-port plate with a dual-port plate. Wire the phone jack the same way it was wired for your phone (blue pair). Use short jumpers to put the orange pair on the blue terminals of the second jack for the fax line.

This only works with T568A, not T568B. Your data lines, if used, will not use the blue & orange pairs in a 568A but the orange pair will be used for data in a 568B scheme.

You should be able to use a regular (RJ11) 2 line splitter adapter/cord at the jack, since line 1 is on the blue/white presumably (a normal phone with a rj11 cord works in that rj45 jack, right ?). Line 2 (your fax) should show up as white/orange.. or the wires on each side of the blue-white middle pair. These would be the other wires of a rj11 cord, so it should match.

At your panel, youd have to find the entrance white/orange that the telco used and connect it to the white orange going to your jack.
