I've been able to find a lot of articles on repairing nail holes in drywall, but not pertaining to exactly what I want.

I have this rack in my bathroom, where the screw nails eventually ripped out, so now I have nail holes in the drywall. I'd like to fill in those holes and rescrew the rack exactly where it was.

I've found out how to patch those holes but is the compound going to be strong enough to hold a screw?? If not, what type of compound should I use and what's the best way to fix the nail hole so I can reuse it?

Thanks!

Are these "screw nails" actually going into the wood studs? Or just into the drywall?
No type of patch/compond will be stronger than what was there.

If just into drywall, you need to use any one of the myriad of anchors out there. There are plastic tap in anchors, plastic self drilling, metal self drilling, moly's, toggles...and tons more. Available at any hardware store or Home Center. Just don't overload the rack

If into wood, just get longer and 1 size larger screws and replace them, and don't overload the rack.

You probably won't even have to do anything with the holes, unless they ripped out a big chunk. If it did that, you probably already had some sort or anchor...and the rack was too heavy.

Take what you have to the hardware store..they'll find you the right thing.

Did I say don't overload the rack?

Actually it was just a towel rack, and one of my friends apparently grabbed a hold of it and pulled it out.

So the rack actually was using plastic anchors, so the hole is as wide as a plastic anchor. I'm guessing there is no way to reuse those holes??

Should I just then move the rack a few inches over??

Thanks

There are plastic wing type anchors..."togglers" (?) or something similar...which will expand behind the drywall. They use about the same size hole as a regular plastic anchor, but expand behind the wall to hold over a greater area. Most towel rack mounting plates would cover the slightly larger head of the plastic toggle. you put them in the hole, tap in with a hammer, put a small plastic pin in to expand the wings..then mount your rack.

As said...take your rack and the old screws/anchors to any hardware store or home center..and they should set you up. If you can give them the approx size of the existing hole and thickness of the wall..you can just buy a single style, but they sell assortments as well.

Heres a great explanation of all the options...Using Wall Anchors Including Molly and Toggle Bolts, Plastic Anchors, Expansion Anchors and More from The Natural Handyman Home Repair and Do It Yourself Website (http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/inffastener/infanchor/infanchor.html)

Take one of the old screws and anchors with you and go to a local harware store. They should have a few options for you.
