We will be taking down old tile back splash during our remodel, but we're not sure if we'll have the money to install a new back splash right away and we may end up just painting the wall for the time being.

Once the old tile is removed, will the wall itself be in good enough shape to paint? Or should I plan on removing it down to the studs and hanging new drywall?

Thanks.

Mark

It should be just fine to paint. You may have some mastic or grout left on the wall. You'll have to scrape that off. And if there are any low spots, dimples, etc., you'll have to fill and sand those. But the wall should be fine to paint. There's nothing in the tile or adhesive that will prevent you from painting.

Good luck with the remodel.

Rock Stone,

Ummm...typically removing tile from drywall will pull the drywall paper and gypsum with it.

HotinOKC,

You are correct, if the tile was applied over unpainted drywall. Every backsplash I've seen was applied over a painted wall, which makes it easier to pull the old tile off.

Dont count on it. If the backsplash was installed correctly, its likely that drywall will be unsalvagable. Its easier to put up new, then to try and fix the mess, much less time.

Just speaking from my experience working with a tiling contractor...

Thanks for the input. Sounds like it will just be a "wait and see" type thing. No biggie as it might actually be beneficial to tear the old drywall down as I want to add a couple new outlets anyways. Thanks again.

You can painstakingly try to remove each tile without doing damage to the drywall, or you can demo the whole thing in a half hour. If you replace the drywall now, you'll not have to replace it down the road when you decide on a new backsplash.
