Go to a corner and use an awl to push into the backing of the carpet. Push towards the corner and lift. That should get you started. I've also use needlenose pliers and grabbed the carpet pile in the corner. Though using the pliers can tear napp out if the carpet is weak or you are too aggressive.

HI.
Similar problem. Don't know how I'll avoid Saturdays flood.
After getting a corner up, do I just pull it off the tack strip?Do I need a prybar or special tool? I only have tomorrow to do this.
Stinkin' river.

Once you can get a handfull of carpet you just lift it up. No special tools needed. Release the perimeter of the room and roll up the carpet.

I'm sorry to hear about your home being affected by the flooding. :(
