Quirky wash cycle.
Load switch = Small
Temp switch = Hot/Cold
Normal wash, 6 minutes
The washing process hangs at two points: when I set the regular wash cycle at 6 minutes and pulled the timer out, the tub filled to the right level and the water inflow stopped, but the timer dial did not advance. When I manually advanced the dial, the washer went to the end of the wash cycle just before the rinse detent and hung again. I manually advanced the timer dial several clicks to get into "Rinse". The cycle ran to "Off" from that second manual advance.
In the whirlpool DIY Repair Manual under "Timer does not advance", I see "Timer motor", "Timer", "Water level switch", "Loose terminal" and "Broken wire in wiring harness". I checked the first two possibilities by installing a new timer. I checked the Water level switch by installing a new water level switch. I understand the problem can be due to a bad lid switch, but my lid switch works properly so far as I can tell.
What to do now? Check the wiring harness? If so, is there any way to figure out which of those many wires correspond to my particular timer advance problem?

You need a timer. Timer points or motor going bad.

...I replaced the timer / timer motor and the water level switch (all new parts). The lid switch seems to work properly.
The current situation is as I described it in initial post.

so when it doesnt advance is it agitating or just sitting there?

It just sits there. For hours when I let it.
I understand there's supposed to be a two minute delay, so this isn't normal.

so it wont agitate and makes no noise after the water comes in. what happens when you turn it to spin?
often times one of the wire terminals at the motor gets hot and opens. remove the large connector going to the motor and look for burned wires. also look at where the wires connect going into the motor

I put the timer on 6 minutes, regular wash, medium load, warm/cold temperature. Engage to start.
The tub fills to medium load level and the water shuts off. The timer does not advance from its start position.
After five minutes, I advance the timer dial slightly toward "Rinse". Agitation begins, then the tb begins to rotate and drain, then it spins. The timer advances toward "Rinse" and rinse water fills the tub to the proper level. then shuts off. At that pointy, the timer dial is ever so slightly upstream from the "Rinse" mark. The timer stalls at that point; nothing happens.
After five minutes, I advance the timer beyond "Rinse" toward "Spin". The tub drains and spins and the cycle runs to "Stop".
So the timer stalls at two points, in both cases just after the water shuts off.

really sounds like the timer considering it will fill, agitate and spin

...I replaced the timer/motor with a new timer/motor and nothing changed.

It sounds like you are saying that each time the machine stops it is right after it has filled with water? Is that correct? If so, check the tube that goes from the tub to the water level control for obstructions and also make sure you wired the new water level control properly.

...I'm not sure. When the cycle is part way between the first hang up and the second hang up, I see water coming into the tub while the tub is being pumped out and/or is spinning. The timer hangups seem to come when the tub is filled to a specified level and that happens twice in each wash cycle.
