Flooring Tile - Flexbond 50lb bags don't weigh 50lbs

Can anyone tell me why the Flexbond bags I am buying from Home Depot only weigh 43 to 46 pounds? Not one comes close to 50 lbs. I found this by accident. I was only mixing half the bag, so I was going to put in half by weight. I put the bag on the digital scale and it said 46 pounds. Then I picked up another and it said 43 pounds. I looked over the bag for any sign that it should eigh anything other than 50 lbs and could not find anything. At this rate, the 27 bags I buy will short me of 148 pounds of thinset. I think I am going to take this issue up with HomeDepot, as they sold it to me. Am I right, if they sell me a 50 lbs bag of Thinset, shouldn't weight near 50 LBS?

In all my years, I have never thought to weigh a bag of thinset. Maybe I should start. Ive probably been shorted 100 tons of thinset over the years.:D

No real good reason that the bags should not weigh 50lbs or close to it. Most times when you handle any bagged cementious product you'll notice that they "blow" a little out the corners of the bag. Shouldnt be 4 to 7lbs though. Wow.:madhell:

I spoke to Custom Building products today and they say thast they spot check the bags. They told me to take the bags back to the store where I bought them. I said that they weigh 1000 pounds, minus any shortage on their part. I don't have a real good choice here. I'm still waiting for the Home Depot manager to call me back. He is looking into my claims.
I'm going to take my scale to Lowes and see if their equiv product is closer to 50lbs. I will make a switch if it is. Strange enough, Lowes was much cheaper on all Thinsets in my neighborhood.

Why not suggest to them that they should give you 3 free bags to make up the shortage rather than return 27 bags.:)

How accurate is your scale?

Does the bag say dry weight or selling weight? Cement cause pick up or lose moisture.

If you are asking for refund, you will need good proof, unless the retailer is willing to eat the amount. Manufacturers are very, very reluctant to admit any errors and pass on the % difference to all retailers. - This is because of possible future liability for projects built with similar materials.

A bathroom scale does not cut it! - Just hope HD believes you and is interested in public relations.

Why wouldn't a bathroom scale work? Espcially a digital, which normally uses strain gauges to do the measuring? I mean for getting some compensation from the retailer of course. They want to keep the business. Might be different with the manufacturer.

Digital bathroom scales are known to be inaccurate. You could get on the scale one hour, then an hour later, the weights are different.

HAH...that must be why I get heavier every day...lol. Darn scales are the problem. Not beer....and ribs...and steaks.....and pork chops.....and mashed taters..... and bisquits ....and ...and...

But seriously..no..I wouldn't weigh 10 lbs of saffron on a bathroom scale..too expensive. Most newer ones are 1% accurate though. The spinning dial types, not so much, but a quality digital is pretty close.

Again..I wouldn't take the results to court..but to deal with HD..ok, I think that would be plenty accurate to get a few extra bags as compensation.

You may need to swap to those commercial trailer scales. Your weight will then be certified. :p

I'm not THAT big....hmmm....yet?

Summer is almost here..I drop 30 when the weather warms up and I get back to chores.
