We need to replace our vinyl flooring in the bathroom and we are new to this. Does anyone know if it's recommended to apply some kind of water barrier/sealant first, or is it o.k. to just put the adhesive and then apply the vinyl?

Newb when I did it as well. What kind of flooring underneath?

I did it on older concrete and just put the adhesive, let it tack up..then the vinyl. Plywood might be different.

Go by the makers recommendations.

Hey thanks for your reply Gunguy. We also have concrete. We actually have to strip 2 layers of sheet vinyl off. So not really necessary to put some kind of water sealant barrier first - right? We're calling all around and this is kinda pricey anyway.
What actually happened is that the vinyl is discolored (black/purple) marks near the base of the toilet. We suspect a small leak (maybe the silicone seal worn out). So gotta fix the toilet and replace the vinyl. Thanks.

Exactly my situation.....

Clean the old stuff well.....scrape..scrape scrape... If any cracks or raised areas, those need to be addressed.

Use the right adhesive..and follow the directions.

Not a Pro..but ours turned out great...with help from folks here.
