At the facility where I work they keep some frozen stuff in a couple of chest freezers they have operating outside on the back deck where temperatures often are below freezing, even for weeks at a time. Seems like I've heard this is particulary hard on certain freezer components and is not recommended. So far the freezers still seem to to be working fine. If it's bad to be doing this, please explain why.

It may be that the oil in the compressor could the problem they are talking about. However my family keep one on the back porch in -20 F. winter temp for many years without any problems.
