I got a 5 year old Whirlpool RF378LXKQ1 range with "ceran" top. The right rear (RR) burner has always been a bit "weak" and my wife swears it is yet weaker now. "Weak" being defined as "it just does not heat right, you have to turn it to max to get anywhere and then it's slow too".

I have identified the part needed to replace the burner (it's a 1800 W one) and know how to get to it (lift the cooking top, 2 screws on the front lip from underneath). However - my question is this:

With the above symptoms, can I make sure that replacing the burner element would help? Or could it be that the switch is going? I'd have much easier time figuring out what is wrong if it was flat out not working...

Thanks for any tips!

Your right about one thing. There are other parts here that could also be the problem. The control switch is what controls the heat of the burner. You can take a resistance test of the burner. If my old electric math is right it draws 7.5 amp at 240 volt to make 1800 watts of heat. 240 divided by 7.5 amp is 32 ohm resistance or somewhere in that ball park.
You could just measure one other burner the same size on the range to see if they are approximately the same.
Maybe one of these pros could help you with some figures out of
one of their books.

This is what I did... figured it was worth it to try the switch first. Then I noticed that the old part was replaced with the new part, which is a bit different. This is the old part:

This is the new part:

Rated for more Amps, the new one is... either way - that seems to have fixed it. :)
