I have an old ford jubilee tractor with a crack in the #1 piston. Best I can tell, you can only buy new pistons in a set [$350] and ofcourse if you are going to do that, you should also turn the crank and replace the bearings - all of which takes more money than I have to spend in the near future.

The race shop where my oldest son used to work suggested welding the top of the piston and putting the motor back together. Any thoughts as to how viable this is? remember it's not a high compression or high rpm motor. it would save me a lot of money [and time] although I'd hate to put a dozen hrs on it only to need to tear it back down:eek:

The tractor is mostly used to maintain my 1/4+ mile long driveway although I also use it in my garden and other property maintainence.

Up untill a few months ago the tractor ran great and has never used any oil [I've owned it for 17yrs] it started losing power and then got worse - no compression in #1 cyl unless you pour some oil in it, which is why I pulled the head.

Mark,

Take a look at this:

Discount Tractor Parts and Manuals for Older and Antique Tractors (http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/store/model_parts.cgi?SearchArea=FORD&&md=Jubilee&cat=Engine%20Pistons%20and%20Sleeves&r=mcats)

Hope this helps. Good luck. If you weld it, try to keep the weight the same as the others to keep everything in balance.

Thanks Ken! you made my day:thumbup:

The sites I looked at only had sets [including sleeves], glad to know I can buy just one:D

I hadn't thought about the weld aftecting the balance although I wouldn't think it would be too big of a deal on those old 4 cylinders since they don't turn that high of a rpm.

Mark,

Good luck with your project. I come from the 8N days. We used an 8N for years and years on our small farm. Let us know how it turns out.

Ken

P.S.

Mark, these guys in Jonesborough may have what you need. I have bought parts for our 8N from them in the past. It might be worth a phone call.
