Cycle starts normally, but when it needs to spin faster, the tub doesn't move. A noise sounds like something rubbing... as if the motor is trying to spin the drum.
Diagnostic mode shows this:
-- Clock-wise tumble, low-speed spin and high-speed
spin do not work.
-- Counter-clockwise tumble works, but the machine makes
an unusual r-r-r sort of growl when it does.
-- All other cycles seem to work as normal.
Other observations:
* If I spin the drum by hand slowly it makes no noise.
* If I spin it fast I hear a "click-click" and then the electonic notification "bings" play (the four sounds that get higher in pitch, like when it starts). I'm not sure if this is a problem, although kind of interesting that it does this when unplugged.
* Nothing is blocking the drain.
* All connections and board components seem okay visually.
Could it be:
-- Broken rotor bolt?
-- Ball sensor problem?
-- Bad sensor switch?
I want to take the back bolt off to check out the rotor but am a bit worried that I won't be able to get it back together the right way.
Any advice would be appreciated!

only had one of those apart but I think rotor just unbolts and pulls off. May be somebody else can help better. When you spin it by hand is the noise from back? Try having another person turn drum while you are standing in back.

you can hear those little balls in the baffles rattling around when you spin those by hand. or does it sound like a bra wire or something hitting the basket?
still think there is a really good chance the problem is the hall effect sensor

The display coming on... with the machine unplugged is normal. The direct drive motor back-feeds the electronics. I wonder if something has worked it's way between the tubs. Check the cleanout (small square door under the main door) for signs. Otherwise check what you can see in the back. I'm ruling out a sensor problem because that shouldn't cause any type of odd noise. This might call for tub removal which is generally not a DIY project.
