Hi I have a hotpoint refrigerator that makes some weird noises. When the compressor shuts off it makes a loud clunking type noise. Is this the compressor going bad or is it something else? Any easy fixes for this?

I have fixed a few of these. Your compressor has a broken/weak internal mounting spring. The only solution, without replacing the compressor, is to remove the motor mounts and use rubber washers to shim the compressor to one side that produces the least noise. Trick is to select this so the compressor dosn't make noise while running!

Well the compressor doesnt make any noise really when running. Its just when it shuts off that it makes a loud noise.

Okay. So it IS the compressor. This is something you will have to live with. Maybe an internal spring inside is weak or broke. Compressors are sealed, and either you live with this til it gives up the ghost, or get new compressor installed or new refrigerator if say it drives you nuts.

51 is right on, mounted on three springs, the motor/pump assembly is hitting on the side of the housing when it turns off. Seen this many times, your compressor may run for years, or kill itself within just a few weeks, not much you can do, except to start saving money for a replacement refrigerator.

ah ok, has been doing this for a while now and seems to be running fine still. Thing was a pain to get upto the second floor though. What does it cost to get a compressor replaced if it does go?

Rates vary in different parts of the country. Call up an appliance place and give them make and model number and ask. And if you have 2 or 3 such shops, or so, give them all a call.
