View Full Version : Caulking Layers?

I recently stripped the old caulk from my tub and applied a new layer. I notice a few spots with holes and was thinking about adding an additional layer. I read mixed reviews on this... some say I should strip it all again and start fresh... some say go ahead and add another layer.

Opinions?

Since this is such a pain to do and it takes the bathtub out of commission while the caulk dries, I would try adding another layer and see how it holds before redoing the whole thing.

A lot depends on why the need for more caulk. If it's just pin holes, recaulking will be fine. If there is a gap between the caulk and the tile or tub it would be better to cut out that section and recaulk correctly.

There are a couple of areas that have gaps between the caulk and the tile. I'm thinking it might just be easier to redo the whole thing rather than try cutting out a section and fixing it :D

My luck I'll cause some sort of DIY disaster.

The problem with caulking over a crack like that is there isn't a lot of surface for the new caulk to adhere to - you wind up with a thin coating of caulk which can easily fail:eek:

Ok, so I've removed the caulk... for the most part. Now I have a sloppy mess... how do I get rid of the excess caulk on the tub and tile? :madhell:

Also, how clear of old caulk residue left behind (the majority of it is gone)? It's about 24 hours old... can I just caulk over that?

A stiff rag and some alcohol should remove the caulking. The residue of caulking can be caulked over and shouldn't pose a problem.

Excellent. Will give it a go this evening!

If you end up having to do any scraping, you'd probably want to use a plastic putty knife, or be VERY careful with a steel putty knife, or else you could scratch the tub/tile.

Yeah, I bought one of those tools that has the scraper and such, all plastic. Thanks for the heads up, though... the wife would cut me good if I scratched her precious tub.
