Hi - I want to install a toilet in my basement and need to know how close the toilet needs to be to the vertical stack/vent that runs up thru the roof.
Currently the stack is on the west end of the house, goes under the entire basement floor and exits out to the city sewer on the east end of the house.
How close to the vertical stack does the new toilet need to be? Can I break into the drain under the floor at the east end of the house (farthest from the vertical stack) and install the toilet there without causing flushing/draining problems?
Thanks

yes you can install the toilet there but make sure you vent it properly or you will encounter problems like sewer gas entering the house from that bathroom

Hello -
Thanks for replying but you didn't answer my question.
How close to the vertical stack/vent should the toilet be?
Will the existing stack that is 20 feet away provide sufficent venting or do I need to install a new vent/stack and if so HOW CLOSE to the new toilet -
Thanks Again

i cant really answer that as i dont know if you have a vent line going up from the basement. usually there will be one just incase but if it is an older home it may not have one. if the stack you are refering to has anything draining into it from above you can not use it as a vent for your basement bathroom.

if you could post a picture of what you have and what you are wanting to do we could be of more help

The vent for your toilet will likely need its own vent up to the attic or roof. You can't wet-vent between floors, so you can't use an existing building drain to vent.

As for using an existing vent or drain, you need to figure out the slope. You'll need a minimum of 1/4" slope per foot. Over 20' you need to rise/fall 5". It depends how much ceiling space you have for a vent (or under-floor space for a drain).

As Dan mentioned - a picture will help.
