Can I use a brad gun or stapler to install crown moulding instead of a nail gun?

It depends on the size of the crown moulding and the length of the brad nail or staple. If the crown is very big, it may be too large and heavy for a brad nail to work. If it's just a little crown (like 2 1/4") that is being nailed directly to wood (like around kitchen cabinets) then a brad nailer or staple could work. But when you have 1/2" drywall between the crown moulding and the framing, it's often best to have a heavier gauge nail, meaning you'd want to be using a 15 or 16 ga finish nailer.
A good rule of thumb is that you want the fastener (be it a brad nail, finish nail, or stapler) to be long enough that it holds into at least 1" of the framing material. This will help prevent the nail from pulling straight out under normal conditions.
