This is gonna sound strange, but your advice please related to a home alarm or sensors.
We're adopting a child (5 yrs old) from a foreign country.
He's been an orphan his whole life, raised in a good
orphanage, and has never been to America.
My wife wants us to look into having sensors or even
an alarm placed on our doors/windows for obvious
reasons. We have a large, two story house, and money is going to be tight after the adoption obviously.
What DIY suggestions do you have for us to place some
forms of door/window sensors so we have some peace
of mind? ...
We're talking about 10 doors, and 20 windows or so.
We want to consider this not only for safety, but if he's prone to wander or want to get out of the house. Again, this is more for us to know about anything, especially at nights, until he gets adjusted to us and his new home.
Thank you everyone.

That's a lot of openings to cover, and even if you only try to put contacts on just the doors, it's going to add up fast if you try to go wireless.
Going hardwired would be much cheaper, but it's a lot of work, and we have no indication of your skill level and tool availability.
Pretty much any of the current production models from the major makers will do what you want, but, again, your ability to install and configure the hardware is the real deciding factor.

Thx for the reply.
I consider myself pretty advanced DIYer and decent at electrical. Tools are not a problem.
However, as it's a two story home, I'd like to avoid fishing wires.
When you say "add-up" how about a rough ballpark?

You probably don't need to put sensors on all 20 windows - only the ones that can be easily entered.
If you search eBay you can find some nice deals on brand new Ademco wireless sensors.
I recently did my home with 7 recessed door sensors (5818MNL), 10 window sensors (5820L), 2 motion sensors (5890), 2 smoke/fire (5808W3), 2 glassbreak sensors (5853), 2 remote keypads (5828v), 2 remote keychains (5804) for about $900 for all those sensors. The home already had a Lynxr-EN, which you can find for about $200 or less.
Total price for me was around $1100, but that includes a backup cellualr unit, the Telguard TG-4, along with appropriate transformers, batteries, wires, and a separate Wave2EX siren. All bought new from eBay retailers. I priced the exact same components at other internet retailers, and they were about double the price I paid.
Most on this forum will probably not recommend an all-in-one unit like the Lynxr because it's usually installed out in the open and can be easily compromised by thieves. If you're starting from scratch, better to get a Vista or comparable unit where the main unit can be hidden/locked away, and the control panel is separate from the main unit to reduce the chances of the burglar finding the main unit and disabling it. Plus, it's much easier to expand than the AIO units.
But I already had the Lynxr-EN, and I keep it in a locked closet, and use the remote panels to arm/disarm it. I also have a door sensor on the security closet itself.
