Lighting, Light Fixtures, Ceiling and Exhaust Fans - 12x12' kitchen - 4 can lights enough?

My kitchen is approx 12'x12'. I have the ceiling torn out and am replacing my electrical. Right now i have (4) 6" halo cans up about 34" off the cabinet walls. approx 4' apart. The ceiling height is 9'. I plan to have under the cabinet lighting as well as an additional can light over the sink.

Is this enough lighting or should i put in another couple cans?

With 9' ceilings I think you will be fine. Depending on the lamps and trim rings you choose you can spread the light out nicely. And with the additional under cabinet lights and the can over the sink will light up the counter well for making food and cleaning up..

That conferation will work just fine all it depending on the type of bulb and trim you will use.

65W30BR bulbs is most common used in the recessed cans just make sure you get them in flood verson not in spot verson the reason why I mention that due the spot will make too much light in small spot circle.

Just make sure you keep the undercabent luminaires on the lighting circuit not on the small appalince branch circuit { the code is very strict on this }


If you feel it too bright you can install the dimmer to dim down the light a little.

My kitchen is about that size and it has four recessed fixtures. I do have the polished reflectors rather than black stepped baffles in the standard trim rings. It gives decent lighting for general purposes but I really need some undercounter task lighting.

If you put in undercabinet lights you might be able to see better :).

JK, Furd, normally your posts are right on.

If you switched to white baffles or clear Alzak reflectors you will get more light out of the same bulbs. The black absorbs the reflected light.

Hmmm, maybe that's why I have trouble seeing. I thought I was going blind.
