My dining room chandelier is controlled by two switches. I want to put a dimmer switch in. Do I have to put a dimmer (three-way) at both ends or can I simply replace one existing switch with a dimmer and have the other end be an on/off?

Buy a three-way dimmer in a style you like. Make sure it's a 3-way dimmer. They cost about 50% more than a standard dimmer. Just buy one. Then you can replace either of the two switches with the dimmer.

When you get ready to change out the switch for the dimmer, along with turning off the power, pay particular attention to which wire is on the odd colored terminal screw. This is the COMMON. The other two wires can connect to either of the other two wires.
