I am less handy than Stephen Hawking, so please go gently and question all facts and terminology I put forth.

I have a two sink Kohler bathroom setup.

On one, the....plug? The thing that closes up and down on a lever? and drain the sink? is broken. I've tried to look at the other one to see what is wrong mechanically, but the horizontal connection just won't go in. I think maybe it has snapped off inside, but it is very difficult to get in and see.

Perhaps as a result of this, sink has been draining slower and slower. I cleaned out the U-trap, but it seems the problem is right below this busted plug thingie.

I'll stop. Can someone mock me at this point?

Well there is a ball attached to the rod that goes into the assembly and if that is sitting in there on a broken off section of the rod it certainly could be causing a partial blockage and possibly a build up at that point.Even if it isn't the blockage cause it needs repair.Since it's a Kohler you "might" be able to get just the parts so I'd take it apart and go to a plumbing supply that sells to the public and give it a try but expect to not find the parts because the odds are not exactly in your favor. If you do great but if not you'll have to replace the entire assembly. The parts in question have little standardization so using other brands etc parts will not work.If you can't find the Kohler parts then it's the whole thing. That said it's not really that hard of a job and you do not have to replace it with a kohler unit though a K. unit might look better.Note that the assembly is everything from the sink including the lip inside the basin to the bottom of the pipe section below the area you are having trouble with.

Okay, thanks.

For the short-term I would just like to get the drain plug thing out. Is there a simple way to do that?

By the way, what are the correct terms for these things?

It is commonly known as a "pop up assembly" and/or just a pop up.

Where the rod goes into the assembly is a screw off cap.If you remove that the rod should come out. That should allow you to remove the plug.Be sure to screw the cap back on and even then be aware it may leak out of the hole so you might want to try to rig a way to plug it or set up a way to catch any leakage.

Wow, that was awesome, thanks, what came out looked like my ex-wife's kootch.

Okay, how do I reset the damn thing? It seems like the vertical whatsit isn't in tune with the horizontal whosamallcallit
