What I am looking for is floor mat type switch that closes a contact that I can run to a door bell, an X-10 input, etc.

I want to use the mat on a covered outdoor porch to let me know that our small (30lbs) dog is at the door (the kids let her out and tend to "forget" her).

I have thought about using one of those "halloween" mats, but don't think we would hear it inside the house... plus it might scare the dog off. I googled Floor Mat Switches and found a number of "home made" options, but I am afraid the ones I saw won't hold up long out side (it won't get direct rain, but may get wet at times).

Anyone have any ideas of where to find a mat that would hold up for this application... that isn't too "industrial" or expensive?

Thanks,

Steve

Go to your grocery store or wherever they have the automatic door openers with the rubber mats in front of the door, you know the type, at the older stores (not the ones with motion senors above the door). And look to see if there is sticker or tag of the door repair company on it. You will need a LOW voltage relay etc. Back in the 70's & 80's we used these mats to light up haunted house scenes
