Good evening everyone.
I would like to update and spice(no pun)up my kitchen. The backsplash is a white type of laminate or formica(I can't tell). My goal is to tile it. The question I have is can I tile over that white finish? Thank you.

You probably could, but the tile installation is only as good as the existing installation. Is the formica/laminate well adhered?

Is so, I would say scuff it up with some sandpaper and clean it very good.

Use a good quality thinset, nothing in a bucket.

Hi sandman512,

I'd suggest to cut out the laminate and set a new backsplash according with your preferences--> It will be less work with better results

If you tile over the backsplash, that is exactly what it will look like, a tile over formica backslpash. Remove the existing backsplash. If the drywall behind it is really chewed up as a result, just replace the drywall. It'll look much better this way and really isnt any more work.:)

Agree you need to start from scratch so you have a good surface to work from. More work, but it will be better in the end.
