I have a natural gas furnace that has electric heat primary. I noticed a few weeks back that when the electric heat is supposed to be on the inside fan is moving air, but only cold air is coming out. When I go outside and hit the red reset button on unit it turns on and electric heat starts coming through to the house. I may have had this problem for a while, b/c once it gets cold enough in the house the gas furnace kicks on and keeps things liveable.
I have had to reset the outside unit 3 times in the past month. It seems to run for a few days on its own and then will require resets. I'm curious if anyone knows if this is more likely a setup issue or actual mechanical/electrical fault. When the unit is running it seems to work fine. Same with the 2nd stage gas heat, when it kicks on it provides great heat.
I'm curious if my outside switch which designates "Gas Heat" when it gets below an adjustable temperature could also be the cause?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Last week I reset it again and the electric heat worked for about a week and required a reset again this morning. Anyone with any ideas?

On a Rheem HP, I guess that is what you are saying you have outside... Could use some model #'s, but it sounds as if you have a Rheem Dual Fuel System... back to the outdoor unit. ON a Rheem Hp the out door unit has a High Pressure switch on some models, if this trips in the heating mode it is normally caused by high pressure at the indoor coil, this can be caused by a dirty air filter, dirty coil, closed grills or vents, to slow of a blower speed or an over charged system.
1-Check your air-filter
2-Check your indoor coil for dirt
3-Make sure all supplies and return air vents are open
4-Make sure the blower is wired to High speed
If none of this works...
5-Call a service company to check the charge on the system
