I would like to remove the old popcorn ceiling. I understand just adding moisture and using a putty knife will take it off. What do I have to do to prepare the ceiling to repaint it? Do I have to re-texture it, possibly there is something available that can just be rolled on? Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

Barbara,
I am in the process of removing popcorn ceilings from my house. Yes, a spray bottle and a putty knife are the tools I have used.
A little 'patching' will probably be required over nail holes, but I've found Behr's texture paint to be a wonderful way of hiding a multitude of sins. It's a cool product that allows you a number of texturing options.
Good luck

Think big!Cover the whole room up,using at least a one gallon yard sprayer and at least a 6" broad knife. If the ceiling has never been painted should come off in minutes.
