Gas and Oil Home Heating Furnaces - help with old oil furnace

We have an old oil furnace that runs well but lately the fuel smell when it fires up is really strong. Any info on how to fix? :confused:

a fuel smell is a bad sign.. in your best situtation you should be calling a service person but if not.. I would inspect everything for leaks... if that is ok make sure the nozzle is ok or change it.. Make sure it fires right away when the furnace is turned on.. if there is a delay.. you might be getting bad spark so inspect electrodes but if they seem good your transformer could be shot.. but fuel smell equals bad... unless your air mixture is wrong and your running really rich .. so make sure the air intake is clean. Also make sure your filter is clean so air can flow properly.. but a service person might be your best bet

if you smell fuel oil call a service company asap before it gets worse and soots up your home. do not attempt to work on the burner w/o the proper testing instruments.
