We would like to replace the carpeting in our 1st floor living, dining and master bedroom with some type of wood floor. We have a pool in the very small backyard--it is just a few steps from our back door, so we do have occasional situations with children (we have three, and they all have friends!) running inside directly from the pool, dripping water everywhere. We were worried that oak or some other type of hardwood would be likely to warp with all the moisture (we also live in Houston, a notoriously humid area--all our carpets need to be re-stretched because of the high humidity), and had heard that bamboo would be more moisture-resistant. However, I'm reading conflicting reports about this all over the internet. I've done enough research to know that Strand bamboo is harder than other types, and I think we'd want to go with an engineered product for stability, and also a lighter color for the hardness. However, I really haven't been able to determine whether bamboo is a good product for our situation. I don't want to rely on a salesperson who might just tell me what I want to hear to make the sale. We also have pets (a dog and a cat) in addition to the 3 kids, so durability is a factor. Off-gases are a consideration as well, as all 3 children have asthma. Any insight, advice or information is welcome! I'm also looking for product recommendations. Thanks!!!

You can put in any type of wood or bamboo but you will have to change the way you do things. The pool situation first: you'll need outdoor mats, indoor rugs and anything to keep water from coming in and sitting on the floor or you will get cupping; on any wood or bamboo. The kids will need to be educated about maintainence. If you can't handle this i would not feel comfortable selling you a wood/bamboo floor. If low maintainence and durability are priority i would suggest looking at a luxury vinyl product like amtico or adura. These will be highly water resistant, look so much like wood (amtico has an excellent bamboo look) and maintainence is as simple as it gets. The finishes are also long wearing.
