I was hanging a flush mount light fixture in a bedroom. I took the old fixture out a few days ago and didn’t look at how it was installed. I went to put the new one up last night and was having problems with the connection. There are three sets of black and white wires coming into the box. All three of the blacks were tied together and all three of the whites were twisted together. There is also a red line that comes out of the same tubing as one of the sets of black and white wires. I tried connecting my black wire on the fixture to all three of the black wires and the white wires on the fixture to all three of the white wires in the box and ran the ground wire to the red wire. The light came on, but it was not running off of the light switch that used to work the old fixture (it stays on all the time). I tried separating the wires in the box and ran the whites to the whites and the blacks to the blacks for each set of wires (meaning I tired to connect the fixture to each of the sets of black and white wires individually and tried this three times?once for each set of black and whites in the box) and did not connect anything to the red wire. The set of blacks and whites that is coming out of the same tubing as the red wire made the light go on all the time (was bypassing the light switch), while the other two sets did not work the light at all.
One other thing to note was that in the old setup, as I mentioned all whites were twisted together and all blacks were together. The whites had the connective cap removed and so did the red, which I think would mean that they were connected to the old light fixture. The black wires were capped together up in box and may not have been used at all. But that is just a guess based on how it looked when I went back to it.
This is the only light running off of this switch and this switch only works this lightl. Lastly, when I look at the light switch this is running off of, the black and red wires are connected to the switch and the white wire is capped off by itself in the back. Does anyone have any ideas on how I need to hook this thing up?

Leave blacks wired together, wire white from light and whites together. Hook black from light to red.
