I have a large stone fireplace with a 20"D x 8-1/2'W x 6"H hearth built of large stones with roughly 1" mortar spacing. I am planning to remodel with a metal stud & cementboard wall in front of the existing stone wall, tile on the hearth & around the FP, a gas FP insert, and a wood mantle surrounding the tile.
How do I fill the stone on the hearth to level for tile? I'll use a rotary hammer to knock off the high points, but the lowest point of the uneven stones & mortar will still drop at least an inch from the highest plane. Mortar in layers? Build a form & pour regular Sacrete & screed it level? I can build it up a little, but I don't want it much higher than the 6" it is now, so the concrete will be thin in spots - can regular concrete be applied like that? Or should I use a patching-type concrete or cement mix that can be applied thinner? The finish needs to be only nice enough for tiling.
And how long does it have to cure before tiling?
I welcome any suggestions.
