I have a fairly new bedroom suite that has a veneer finish. We have moved a few times and during the process of moving it has been damaged. There are chunks about an inch wide and maybe a centimeter or so deep missing. I really love this suite and I'm wanting to know if there is a way of fixing this by sanding, filling in the chunks or whatever needs to be done. Can you sand and paint furniture with a veneer finish? The color is a cherry and I'm thinking about finishing black. Is this possible as well?

I am not an expert but do have a little bit of experience with veneer furniture. The veneer on the pieces I had (furniture was probably from the 70's) was very thin - not possible to sand. I disguised the chips by staining the exposed wood underneath the veneer - not perfect but at least it was not as noticable.

Thats what I figured :) I had also thought about getting those touch up markers for furniture and seeing what that would do. Thanks so much for your help.

well, theres a few different things u can do. first off, did i understand right? the gouges are a centimeter deep and youve gone past the veneer into the underlying material? depending on your woodworking skills and available tools, you can route it out with a router and inlay a grain matched (or pretty close) replacement. that would be pretty tough for a novice at the craft. keep in mind, that if your gonna fix it you have to match the stain. best bet is to call some custom cabinet shops (LIKE SAGUARO CUSTOM CABINETS IN PHX AZ!) and ask them to match it. might cost 30 bucks but how bad do you want to fix it? theres also wax crayons that u melt into and flatten down that come in just about any color possible. chx out mohawk's site for that ? . but if your gonna paint it black (ouch!!!) which'd be the easiest thing to do, provided you have the proper finish equip, just lght sanding, filling etc. dont recomend spraypainting though. let me know what youre leaning towards.
