I took up a couple of tiles in my bathroom to see what shape the concrete is underneath. The area pictured is right next to the plumbing for the shower/tub, and a couple of the tiles were already loose, so I'm hoping the concrete revealed is as bad as it's going to get in this small room (9x6')

Can I get away with mortar/thinset and then tile? Do I need to use a membrane first? How bad must it be for me to HAVE to re-surface the concrete first? I hope I'm not there!

Hmmmm,

You will want to clean up all that old adhesive so there's just a clean slab left. Are there any height differences on those cracks? If so, tile is probably a no-go. I would definetly put down a membrane otherwise, like Noble CIS and a good thinset.
