I have a claw foot tub thats leaking via the drain on the bottom. I don't want to pull the drain off without knowing what I'm getting myself into (its the only shower in the house). Is there some type of gasket sealing the drain I need to get? Or is it just some kind of generic putty?

I know your post is old, but it's a foam or rubber washer. You can get a replacement at Lowe's or at one of the clawfoot tub web sites.
