I have a florescent light fixture in my basement stairwell which illuminates only sporadically and sometimes is dimly lit.Would appreciate any suggestios as to what I should be checking:wall:

First things first, check/replace the tubes. Especially if they're black on the ends.
Make sure you use the same type/wattage tubes.
If this doesn't do it then the ballast needs to be replaced. This can be pretty simple because the wiring is just color for color.

I have the same problem as the original poster, but replacing the tube did not help. So it is the ballast?
Is the ballast a standard part or I need to replace the entire fixture?

Yes a ballast is a standard part and is readily available at most home centers.
Make sure you get the right replacement ballast for your fixture.
If you have a standard 2 light 4' fluorescent fixture that uses T-12 tubes then that would be pretty standard but you may consider going ahead and change it to a T-8 electronic for a little energy savings.
