I know stupid question.
House was built in 1975- original mustard yellow tub. Looks to be metal of some kind.... does not even look to be that heavy so I cannot imagine cast iron. Is there an easy way to tell??

Could be coated steel...try a magnet. Otherwise prob some sort of acrylic or fiberglass?

Knock on it with your knuckles. Cast sound is closer to the sound of knocking on your toilet tank. (I just tried it!) Metal tubs give off a way more hollow, clanky, higher pitch sound. Metal tubs are way thinner, and you can almost tell what kind of sound to expect, based on that. Probably a sound similar to knocking on a kettle. Fiberglass has an unmistakeable plastic sound.

If still in doubt: If you have a plain overflow coverplate with no lever in it, you could remove it and see what the edge of the tub material looks like.

The color was 'Harvest Gold', and my guess would be cast iron in a high end home, porcelain steel in a moderate home. Almost too early for fiberglass.
