I have an Ademco 20p control panel, with 6160 keypad that was previously used in our old house. We removed complete
system ( motions, panel, keypad have new door sensors) So all
previous programming should be intact (?) I believe.
I have wired everything back to the correct contact locations,
(I labelled the wires when removing and cut them, leaving a few inches each in the control panel.) I have just stripped and
connected back to those pigtails for testing.
PROBLEM
The keypad will power up and control the panel, BUT
NO Alpha display shows up. Just all the pixels for each position displaying, then fading. looks like a rectangle filled with
square dots.
Tried hooking up a 6150 keypad, No control or display.
Anyone with ideas? MUCH Appreciated! Thanks

Check your keypad connections at both ends. It sounds like you have the power connections right, but you may have the yellow and green data connections reversed.

Thanks for your time and response!
They are all hooked up as per original. It did work for 2 years before being removed. I am twisting ( have taken and retwisted about 4-5 times including trying the 6150) to the old cut KP pigtail, I left on the circuit board. I will double check again. And remove pigtail and wire direct to respective screws.
The system has 3- DT 7435, 1- IS 2260 motions and 2 door
contacts
The 6160 ( I believe standard KP) Backlight lights when KP buttons touched, then goes out after the set time. I can set alarm and turn off alarm. I can cancel alarm after being triggered and sounding alarm. I just don't have anything
alpha or numeric on the display. The pixelated rectangles only
show up across the top row of the display. most prominent I think when buttons are touched. I'll double check.
One thought that bothered me when I realized it ( MUCH later). In the hast of moving, the battery ( which was zipped tied in place in the case) Did not get disconnected and remained hooked up until and after, it probably went dead.
The wires were marked and then cut, leaving the pigtails labelled for noting reassembly.
If the battery being connected, shorted something why
would alarm still work?
I have a separate - new 20p panel. I am thinking of hooking the 2 keypads ( one at a time) putting power to the panel
and see if it gives me any display. Would this hurt the new
board if I don't hook any zones up and just try the KP.
Thankyou VERY Much, for your Thoughts. Benzme

the Keypad has a sticker 8160 is it 6160 or?
The front cover (door) goes from side to side.
Does this change anything?
Thanks

_Possibly_....
The install instructions for the 8160 on the Honeywell website date to 2002, and the keypad is listed as not in production.
It is possible that this may have been modified for one of the custiomized systems that Ademco makes for some reseller brands, and is not compatible with the standard Vista panels (this pops up with First Alert branded keypads, for example).
Letting it run down with the battery _shouldn't_ have corrupted any system programming (when the battery drops to a certain point, a V20p will simply shut down), but you were also cutting connections with the system still under power, so there is really no telling...
The fact that your original keypad will not boot up is actually pretty telling. I think your motherboard might be toast.
Try connecting directly to the keypad connections with a short length of known good cable. If it doesn't come up, I think you have a motherboard that isn't going to come back.

I think it was installed originally in Nov. 04. had been installed by honeywell, Cost a bunch, so it wasn't some fly by night.
I have found some possible references to an 8160 being listed on Canadian parts lists.
Yep, the joys -- brain farts of moving. I couldn't believe
battery got missed possibly.
I will check the honeywell site for manual, do you happen to have a link?
THANKS, Alot MrRonFL; Your help with this and the forum as a whole is GREATLY Appreciated!!!

The installation manual, other than the title line, is word for word, identical to the one for the 6160, so there's no mystery settings involved.
AGAIN, if the original 6150 keypad also is not coming up, then the keypad is probably not the issue, it's either wiring, or a damaged motherboard.

I figured out what the issue was. I was playing with it
(6160/8160) a bit and started to get some gibberish letters showing up.
I popped the board and display out of the keypad case, then noticed that the display was not permanently attached to the keypad board. (pin sockets) I separated and reset the display, now it works as it's suppose to.
The housing had the 8160 sticker on it and the keypad board is stamped SA6160.
The 6150 issue ( not displaying or controlling) is fixed and now works. I looked back and forth at the panel instructions and the keypad instructions, then applied the panel information to the keypad.
The keypad instructions say "keypad nonaddressable address 31 and addressable 00-30" and the panel instructions say "first keypad is address 16, one keypad per address."
And the point seems to be that, you MUST change the address of the keypad in the keypad before it will talk to the panel. Not very clear in the instructions.
It doesn't seem to make much sense. Why don't they just tell how to program keypad address, then refer installer to the
panel guide for system being installed, for required address?

That's because some ademco panels use non-addressable mode, and others use keypad addressing but use a different set of addresses than the "P" series panels use.
With nearly all alarm hardware, you have to cross reference your instructions like that, regardless of brand.
