I recently moved into a new home and it came with recessed fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I hate them. Very little light, and what does come out is blue in color. Not very useful. I'd like to replace them with LED or halogen, but the fixture itself only takes 4-prong fluorescent bulbs, not the screw-in type. Is there a way I can change this? I took a closer look at it and there are blue and red wires connecting to the receptacle, for what it's worth.

Before doing that (and the change won't be easy or cheap and may not produce better results), try new bulbs in the fixtures you have. The new bulbs will be brighter (they get dimmer as they age) and you can buy higher-end ones that have better color balance. And of course clean or replace the diffusers if they are dirty or scratched.

You want to buy a lamp with 835 to 840 color code PL-(wattage of the lamp)-840. 840 is cool white which is as bright as you want to go inorder not to get the blue color. Also the lamps maybe old and are not fully lighting which may look blueish.
