It appears my exit lights have lost the ablity to keep the back up battery charge. Is this a common occurance in aging exit light circuitry? BTW this problem is with new batteries installed. These exit lights are about 12 years old.

Assuming that the new batteries are a direct replacement for the old ones, the charger circuit could be bad. Common - no but voltage surges etc. can take their toll.
